It's a 20-year-old cat-and-mouse game: Artists seek cheap space in edgy neighborhoods, then developers and loft-seeking yuppies swoop in and price the artists out.

But there is dwindling real estate to play this game, many artists contend, causing many in the arts community to worry about their future. Decades of development and gentrification have left artists fewer options.
